New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will always live a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
