The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
