New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
