Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
