International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its representatives joined Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military control to support the search for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Agreements and Captive Remains Return

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on 10 October, the group is obligated to hand over the remains of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as some of those bodies are believed to be in locations past the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the remains of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the committee.

She continued: “The parties to the conflict determined the procedures of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She further clarified: “The ICRC was not involved in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

According to international humanitarian law, it is the duty of the sides involved in a conflict to locate, collect, and recover human remains.

American Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader issued a two-day demand to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start returning the remains of the hostages who died, including American citizens, quickly, or the other countries participating in this great peace will intervene,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

As the two-day window approached, the group, joined by the Red Cross, joined Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for bodies past the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use heavy machinery and trucks in the search.

Authoritative Confirmation and Press Coverage

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that Hamas representatives had been permitted to access areas of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the remains of captives, together with Egyptian and ICRC teams.

“For this purpose, Hamas members were permitted to cross the yellow line,” the source was cited as stating.

Footage published by a regional network seemed to show members of a specialized group – part of the group’s military wing responsible for guarding hostages – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Hostage Bodies

The search for the bodies of individuals taken captive has become one of the most delicate matters in the truce reached between the parties. However, the attempt to find the remains has proved difficult from the outset, given the existence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the territory, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, trapped under the rubble.

Diverging Claims on Body Whereabouts

The group has claimed it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with several of its units that had been holding the captives and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that Hamas knew the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

US Position and Disarmament Talks

Although the American leader has acknowledged that a portion of the remains are difficult to access, he said that “others they can return immediately and, for some reason, they are not.”

“This could be related to the disarming of Hamas,” he noted.

The US administration has said it has obtained guarantees from the organization that the group will disarm, though no specific schedule has been set. The militant organisation remains hesitant to surrender its weapons without solid guarantees about the fate of its fighters.
