Report Reveals Alarming Figures

A study titled “Until Harm Ends” filed FoI requests to children’s services departments across the UK nations.

Statistics from one hundred thirty-five municipal councils revealed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five minors categorized as having been trafficked or believed to be trafficking victims, 864 (37%) were listed as disappeared.

In total one hundred forty-one municipal councils answered questions about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who totaled eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine children. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (13%) were recorded as vanished.

Elevated Danger for At-Risk Children

The analysis, published by advocacy groups, cautions that these categories are at “extremely elevated danger” of going missing from care.

Some exploited minors in the UK are UK nationals while the remainder are from overseas.

They have probably experienced either sexual exploitation or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Institutional Shortcomings in Safeguarding

Local authorities have a mandatory responsibility to secure and help exploited and lone minors under child protection frameworks. Nevertheless, there is no publicly available national authorities data on the issue.

The latest analysis alerts that elements such as uncertain legal status can increase young people’s vulnerability to further harm, placing them at substantial danger of re-victimization and further abuse.

Housing Concerns

Starting in September 2021, government bodies have been required to make certain that all children in care under 16 are assigned to arrangements that offer supervision.

Nevertheless, youths in their late teens can still be placed in so-called “supported accommodation” that does not offer daily supervision.
