Fury Explodes as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Criticism

Individuals from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to defend the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
