Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of maximalist demands that involve the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
