In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, may align too neatly with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to take the job. The position was effectively a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

• The shortlist featured various figures, among them a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the process said the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the image of him as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. He is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to examine.
